Hurricanes Sled Hockey is a group of disabled athletes youth and adult from across the state of North Carolina. Our program is comprised of Active Duty & Veteran Military, Cancer Survivors, Amputees and those born with a Congenital Disorder. Our athletes all have two things in common; a physical disability & the strength of a

HURRICANE!

What is Sled Hockey?

Sled hockey (or sledge as it is referred to outside the US) was invented at a Stockholm, Sweden rehabilitation center in the early 1960s by a group of Swedes who, despite their physical disability, wanted to continue playing hockey.

Sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules with the exception some of the equipment and two additional penalties.

The game is played with the same positions as standup hockey. In competitive leagues, checking is allowed.

Most game play is adapted to the skill levels of the participants

The USA National Sled Team plays in the Paralympics and International events. He team consists of world class athletes and they are amazing to watch.

The Equipment

Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades. There are two sticks for each player instead of one and the sticks have metal picks on the butt end for players to propel themselves.

Goalies wear basically the same equipment but do make modifications to the glove. Metal picks are sewn into the backside to allow the goalie to maneuver.
