The coaches and players of the Jr. Hurricanes 14U AA team have had one goal in mind all year...to win the USA Hockey National Championship in Dallas. On Monday, they took a huge step toward achieving that goal. They won the NC CAHA State Championship in Winston-Salem earning an invite to play in Dallas.
The weekend started against the Pineville Falcons. The game started off slowly for both teams with a 1-0 Jr. Hurricanes lead after the 1st. But they found another gear in the 2nd period, scoring 8 goals before finishing things off with 3 more in the 3rd for a 12-0 shutout led by goalie Caleb Blatt. Next up was a matchup against the Carolina Stars who jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. That would be their only lead of the game, however, as the Jr. Hurricanes once again found another level in the 2nd period, scoring 4 goals and putting the game out of reach with a 9-2 win. The final round robin game was a match up with the Queen City Royals. Once again, the Jr. Hurricanes fell behind 1-0 early but it wouldn't last long and they tied it late in the 1st. They scored 9 more the rest of the way to earn the 10-2 win. The championship game was a rematch with the Royals. It was a closer game this time around but the game winning (and shorthanded) goal was scored early in the 1st by Casey Landrum. They went on to 5-0 shutout, this time with Jack Foy in net, earning the victory and sealing the championship.
Zachary Kodesh and Josh Smith led the entire tournament (all age groups) in scoring with 13 points each. There were contributions by the entire team including multiple hat tricks by the Offense, tons of assists and a couple of goals from the Defense. Great passing, blocked shots, big hits, back checking, forechecking, and great goaltending came together to create what was truly a team win. Congratulations to all the players and Coaches. Keep working toward your goal! Good luck at Nationals!
